Whenever I buy a new lense, I firmly check what I could do with this lense. Oh well, with the RF100 I couldn’t check first, since the lense is brandnew in 2021 and I never have done any macroshots before. So it is two times new things for me.

Let’s start the journey with the RF100 lense. According to the specs this is a pure monster lense. Whooping 100mm focal distance, with a length of almost 11cm and an open aperture of 2.8 it comes handy to take portraits. Yes, you can use it without any problems for that and you get supported by a in-lense stabilizer.

The little stain on the lense from the stone didn’t scratch the lense. Although the body of the RF100 is from hardplastics, but endurable.

But lets focus more on the macro side of this lense. Why? Because you have two main reasons to use it for:

  1. a minimal focus distance of just 26cm from sensor level
  2. a magnification of 1:1.4 on full frame sensors

The minimal focus distance is stunning, when you substract the 11cm length of the lense from the 26cm focus distance, you can crouch as close as 15cm to the subject, you want to take a photo of and still get crisp sharp photos. That is really, really close. Even so close, that I was afraif to bump the lense to the subject from time to time.

Combine this focus distance with the 1.4 magnifaction, you get super close up from your subject. Just stunning and jaw dropping.

What a neat lense from the front

And some last specs, the RF100 is an Canon L-series lense, which means, you can see it from the outside by the red ring at the front, it has also special coated front glass elements to avoid glares and it has a rubber lip at the mounting end, which provides a weather seal against dunst and some little rain water. So you can use the pricy lense in harsh weather conditions.

The RF100/F2.8 Macro is 11cm long and with the red ring you can already see that it is an Canon L-lense.

The lense has also some new feature. With the SA-control ring you can control the spherical aberation. This control ring shifts some glass elements inside the lense and you have a certain control about the bouquet or bokeh. I didn’t try this by now, but there is soon another post about this specific feature.

Ok, now lets leave the specs behind and look more towards the macro functionality of the RF100.

As calculated above, you can crouch as close as 15cm to your subject you want to take some macro of. Combine it with the f2.8 aperture you get a super shallow field of depth. It can help to draw the viewers focus on a certain detail.

An aperture of f2.8 gives a super shallow field of depth. You can see the sharp field of view just a few millimeters on the leave. The rest of the image as a super nice compression.
A macro shot of a bee sitting in some small white blossoms.
Insects like this bee are a great subject for a macroshot. Don’t forget to set you camera to take photos in burst mode with a fast shutter speed.

When you are new to macro-photography, you are eager to get to know some basic knowledge. First of all, the super shallow field of view introduces some hefty problems with wind. Even the slightest wind blow is changing the field of focus so dramatically, the sharpness is somewhere in outer space. This can be solved with the focus in servo mode and focusing on one point only. The servo mode dictates then to take your photos in burst mode, which then dictates a fast shutterspeed of at least 1/100s or faster.

There the aperture of f2.8 becomes handy now and if it does not meet the brightnees you need, you can increase the ISO a fair bit. Don’t worry about the noise, you can denoise later in post production quite a lot, since you have a lot of blur in the photo anyway.

If you need some inspiration what to shoot with a super macro monster Canon RF100 f2.8 L-series lense, take a look here.

As Sandra got a challenge yesterday, Maik tested out some gear.

With the use of the magnificent 100mm Macrolense and some starting rain, Maik shot this really close up of a pink waterlily. The rain poured some water droplets on the pink petal leaves and it made it so magically.

What do you think, should Maik continue with so close details of things by using the Macrolense more often?

💙 😯 Entoloma sp. My favourite find from my trip to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Huge thanks to mycobeemushrooms for organising the event. I had the best couple of days logged off in the forest with some great people. Attila and foragingwithvirn were INCREDIBLY knowledgeable, over 90 species identified, loads learnt and a fair few first time finds. Still buzzing. Until next time! ✌️👊
